4 Day Zanzibar Slave Route Tour
4 Day Zanzibar tour explores the dark and sobering history of slavery that makes up so much of what Zanzibar was notorious for. This tour can easily be extended to include some time at one of the idyllic beach lodges or resorts along Zanzibar’s turquoise coastline.
Day 1 – Arrival in Zanzibar
On arrival at the airport or harbor, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Stone Town. Overnight at the hotel on Bed & Breakfast basis
Day 2 – Guided tour of Stonetown
After breakfast depart for a guided tour of Stone Town. This tour commences with a visit to Zanzibar’s colorful market. Alive with the buzz of locals bartering fresh vegetables and baskets of tropical fruit, amongst the heady smell of Jackfruit (and many other exotic fruits) we continue on to the site of the cathedral built in 1874.
The cathedral signifies a potent time in Zanzibar’s history and stands on the site of a past slave market, its high altar standing on the exact site of the whipping post. Slavery was abolished in 1873 through a decree passed by the then current Sultan of Zanzibar. From here we visit the residence of the late Sultans of Zanzibar, ‘Tip Tip House’, the Old Fort, ‘Peoples Palace’ and the House of Wonders’, full of intrigue and vivid history from a bygone era.
The tour ends with a stroll through the narrow streets of the old stone town, the heart of Zanzibar’s vivacious history with time for shopping. Lunch at a local restaurant. 1500hrs, boat trip to Prison Island, the former prison for slaves and quarantine station for Zanzibar, is an absolutely worthwhile experience. Here you will also experience giant tortoises in the wild. Dinner at a local restaurant Returns to the hotel for overnight.
Day 3 – Visit Mangapwani Village
After breakfast transfer to Mangapwani village. Visit of the slave caves and chambers. Lunch at Mangapwani Serena Restaurant. The restaurant is located on the outskirts of Zanzibar Stone town. The Serena Mangapwani Restaurant and Watersports Centre is a great destination for those looking for somewhere special.
Visitors to Mangapwani are offered a fresh seafood barbecue cooked to perfection by Serena’s expert team of chefs. The atmosphere is informal and friendly and the restaurant comprises a series of traditional Makuti bands, all set into a lush hillside overlooking an idyllic beach. At additional costs, guests can also enjoy fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, catamaran rides and other pleasant distractions at the well-equipped water sports center. Late in the afternoon, drive back to stone town. Overnight at the hotel in Stone town.
Day 4 – Depart Zanzibar
After breakfast transfer to the airport for your flight back home.

Zanzibar is without a doubt a tropical dream destination, ideal for getting away from it all, but it is also a fascinating destination from a historical and cultural perspective, as well as being a top adventure and eco-tourism destination.
