What to Expect
Day 1: Litochoro to Kakkalos Refuge
Your guide will meet you in Litochoro’s square and drive you to the Prionia trailhead, the highest point on Mount Olympus accessible by car (1100m). From there you’ll begin your ascent of the mountain.
This section of trail leading to Spilios Agapitos Refuge is the busiest trail on the mountain and you will meet many other hikers from around the world as you meander through dense forests of pine, fir and birch.
You’ll continue past the Agapitos Refuge (2100m) and continue on a zigzagging trail until you’re above treeline and faced with a stunning view of Olympus’s many summits.
You’ll end the day’s hike at the small but cozy Kakkalos Refuge (2700m). The view from the refuge over the Plateau of Muses with the backdrop of the mountain’s rocky top makes for a beautiful evening.
Enjoy a hot meal and rest up for tomorrow.
8-9 hours hiking
Day 2: Summit Mount Olympus, return to Litochoro
After an early breakfast, your guide will decide which summits to attempt based on weather conditions and fitness.
One option is to ascend Skala Peak (2882m) and cross a narrow ridge to the adjacent Skolio Peak (2911m), then return.
The more committing option is to attempt the mountain’s highest summit, Mytikas (2918m). The climb involves a couple hundred meters of somewhat exposed scrambling at the end, so it isn’t for everyone.
Either way, you’ll enjoy incredible views over the gorges and peaks of Olympus’s jagged summit before descending to the refuge and making your way down the mountain.
You’ll follow a different trail down, providing fresh views and a more isolated experience.
Your hike will end at the Gkortsia trailhead where your ride will be waiting to take you back to Litochoro.
8-9 hours hiking
